Thermal substrate insulation board is a lightweight insulated tile backing board developed specifically for use with wet rooms and bathrooms due to being rotproof and waterproof.

Tile backer boards are extremely light and easy to cut (using only a fine tooth saw, jigsaw or utility knife) and to work with.

It consists of a Polyfoam core with glass fibre reinforced polymer-modified cement faces. It is dimensionally stable, doesn't rot or warp and provides excellent resistance to moisture. It also offers the additional benefit of a high level of thermal insulation, making it the ideal substrate for floor tiling over underfloor heating mat systems.

We also stock a wide of accessories for fixing foam board insulation such as screws, washers, and adhesives. If you need any help or advice with you selection, please call one of our friendly team on 01473 559 079 and someone will be on hand to help you with your query.

How to install tile backer boards

To start with, you must ensure that the surface is clean and dry. You then need to plan where your boards are going to and how they are going to be laid out. Be sure to follow any manufacturers guidelines when installing the boards.

Installing onto floors and bricks

Check the surface to make sure it is clean, dry and free of any damage. Once the check is satisfactory, and your floor is solid and secure, prime the boards with the necessary primer (this will depend on what the final use will be). You’ll then need to put a layer of flexible adhesive down and lay the boards on top using a brick pattern, making sure that no corners touch each other. You’ll then need to secure the boards using 40mm galvanised washers & 25mm screws. You’ll then need to use sealant to fill all the gaps between the walls and floors and finally, reinforce the joints with joint tape and cover with flexible adhesive.

Installing onto studwork

This is a much simpler and more straightforward process than installing onto floors. To start with, make sure the surface is clean, dry, and sound. Fix the boards to the studwork using 40mm galvanised washers & 25mm screws and then reinforce the joints with joint tape and cover the tile backer boards with flexible adhesive.

Using backer boards for tiling

Tile backed boards were designed to strengthen the bond between substrate and tile to create a waterproof solution for tiling. They offer a flat surface to tile onto and are available in a range of sizes. They allow for a lot more weight than alternatives allowing you to use tiles of heavier material such as natural stone and marble. They can be used for the following:

  • Underfloor Heating
  • Bathrooms
  • Wet Rooms
  • Kitchen Floors
  • Utility Rooms
  • Conservatory Floors

What size tile backer board do I need?

  • For walls, use 4mm boards
  • For floors, heavy duty walls and plaster walls, use 6mm – 12mm boards
  • For studwork and uneven surfaces, use 12mm+

What’s the difference between backer boards and cement boards?

Backer board consists of a Polyfoam core with glass fibre reinforced polymer-modified cement faces whereas cement boards use a unique cement formula that can be used on floors and walls such as Hardie Board.
